Postings & Ponderings: Utthita Trikonasana
For this month’s Postings & Ponderings, we’re featuring Utthita Trikonasana.
Utthita Trikonasana means Extended Triangle Pose. There are many benefits to practicing Utthita Trikonasana:
- alleviating stiffness in legs, hips and shoulders;
- strengthening the total body;
- toning leg muscles; and
- relieving backache.
Utthita Trikonasana is also an invigorating pose. Practice it and stave off feelings of laziness and sluggishness.
With proper alignment in this asana, you will create many triangles. Study the photo below of B.K.S. Iyengar: how many triangles can you outline within the shape of his pose?

As you become more familiar with Utthita Trikonasana, observe the connections between this asana and others that you practice. What are the similarities, what are the differences? Reflect on asanas detailed in previous months’ Postings & Ponderings and see if you can find some common links. Share with us your thoughts and include a photo of yourself practicing Utthita Trikonasana (everyone who participates will be entered into a draw to win something awesome!).
