Why do you do Iyengar Yoga versus something else?

I do Iyengar Yoga to enjoy myself and feel good. I haven’t found anything else that consistently delivers on both counts.

At this stage of your practice, what is your favourite asana and why?

Can I have two? I love Baddhangulyasana in Tadasana at the beginning of a practice—it feels wonderful to stand ready and awaken the arms and chest.

Salamba Sarvangasana is also a favourite now, although that wasn’t always the case. I like being able to put myself in the inverted position and to stay there, and the ineffable sense of well-being that follows.

What has been the biggest surprise for you in your practice of Iyengar Yoga?

I suppose it is surprising to discover, identify, and even sometimes command the hitherto unknown parts of one’s body, like the armpit chest, the five belly buttons, and the various groins  .

Have you found that there are lessons or benefits from your yoga practice that you carry with you in your daily life? Can you share an example?

From my very first lessons, the benefits to my posture and breathing were evident. Even though I’m not quite bold enough to practice Uttanasana in public, Tadasana, I do all of the time (even waiting in line somewhere!). As soon as I take Tadasana – raise my kneecaps, lower my shoulders, open my chest, & breathe, I immediately feel stress and tension disappear.
